Default 1993 Horn Problem

OK guys, this is my first time asking a question. I have a 1993 convertible. I've read all I can find on my horn won't blow. Pulled the air bag the way you all said, but drank 2 beers while waiting. The horn contact, the piece with the spring and black plastic piece, is out of the white plastic holder. I don't see any way for the black piece to lock into it. Looks like where it should lock in may be broken. Went to the Chevy dealer today, would have had better luck at K-Mart. Any one know where I can get a replacement or some way to repair it? Has any one ever removed the contact holder? I need advice.

"The horn contact, the piece with the spring and black plastic piece, is out of the white plastic holder. I don't see any way for the black piece to lock into it. Looks like where it should lock in may be broken."

To the best of my knowledge replacement sockets are not available and the GM solution was to replace the steering wheel hub assembly. VERY EXPENSIVE and a lot of labor.

But there is hope. This is what I did.

Using a piece of stiff plastic (1/16" Plexiglas sheet works fine or use an old CD or DVD) cut it into a U shaped piece that fits flat into the hub around the hub retaining bolt and with a very narrow slot that the horn wire was fed (but not wide enough slot to allow the bayonet socket to come through) over the socket. This piece will hold the bayonet socket in place. The plastic piece is held in place by a very short bolt (1/2") that is screwed into one of the bolt holes that are used for a steering wheel puller. DO NOT use a long bolt as it may hit the internals underneath the hub causing short or other problems.

I hope the description makes sense. A picture (if I had one) would make it very clear.

I see the idiots are not very helpful, wildride excluded.

Do a search, there was a guy who did a thread about fixing the horn. I fixed mine about a year or 2 ago.
Search 'Horn button'.

Thanks for the help. You would think with this being a C4 problem that someone would sell a a repair kit. Searched horn and horn button and found the repair info using the piece of plastic. I'll give it a shot. Cheap repair. Thanks again for the info. The air can wouldn't fit under the air bag, but easy fix.

Had the same problem on my 93. I had to replace the white ring (plastic piece) because the holder for the wire broke off. Had to pull the steering wheel to replace it. It was a few years ago and the ring was available from the dealer.

And you were more helpful with your "search" answer? I guarantee once you take that stick out of your azz, you'll start to lighten up and have a little fun too.

I had the same problem with my horn. The black plastic piece has a tit on it that locks into the white plastic piece that is down in the hole, it is called a cam. The slot on the cam is broken off, GM wants $37 for a new cam and $240 to install it.

So I prayed to my great Grandmother for her Italian wisdom and guidance to bail me out of this problem. This is what she passed onto me under penalty of death if I should ever reveal the fix.

Get a wooden pencil, remove the eraser, gently shave the eraser down with a razor blade to where it makes a firm wedge. Wedge the eraser into the hole along side of the black plastic piece. This will hold it firmly in place.

My horn has been working trouble free for two years now.

I did ask Grandma what can I do with a wooden pencil without an eraser. She said jam it some place where the sun does not shine. Grandma’s can be so nasty at times.

Hope this fixes your problem. Now tell me what to do with the wooden pencil without an eraser.

John

C4 horns suck. I've installed a hella/porsche horn in my LT4 Vette. Sounds much better now.

OK, got the U shaped piece cut and ready to bolt in. Did you have to shorten the black bayonet socket so it fits flush? It looks like it needs to be shortened about 1/2".

I am not sure what you mean by a "Black Bayonet Socket".

On mine the female socket is yellow and mounts flush with the steering wheel hub assembly. Red wires come from the horn buttons to the male connector which is supposed to plug into the socket. The female socket/receptacle is made of plastic and cracks after years of service and tension from the internal spring so the male bayonet prong can't be locked in.

1993 steering wheel is not the same as the one in the pictures. It has a single black wire with the bayonet connector that snaps into the connector in the steering wheel. From what I can measure, the black bayonet connector sticks up out of the hole about a 1/2".
