new pics 86
so I finally attempted to detail my car. Its an 86 with a $600 maaco single stage polyurethane paint job. The paint is almost 2 years old. Up until now I have just washed and waxed. This time I used Mothers 3 stage system. Wax cleaner, glaze/sealer, caranuba wax. I think it looks okay, I would love to hear some advice on more advanced detailing. What is cut and polish and should I do it? What other products or procedures should I try. I know I need to get around to stripping and polishing the rims but from what I have read it's a lot of time involved, so I am keeping my eye out for some used ones that look better. A lot of people have wondered what the maaco paint looks like so here it is as long as I can remember how to post pics.

LOl dam that doesn't look bad for a 600$ paint job...
Eh i donno about getting rough with a 6000$ paint job might rub it off...
Id keep it waxxed and polished and use some Quick wax weekly to try to make it last as long as you can.
And this shows even cheap paint can look nice if the guy doing the paint is not a jack leg.
600$
Think i may of over payed LOL! ima have to go to Maaco next time !!!
600$ paint looks almost as good as 6000$ paint makes me want to kick myself lol.
I dont think the extra 5400$ is worth a little extra shine!!!
Your car looks really good Elrick alot better then many 4000$ jobs ive seen.

Thanks guys, too those of you who spent the big bucks, talk to me in a couple years and lets see if it holds up. Although I guess I can refresh every few years and still be cheap. You can't really see it in the pics but up close it has some swirls and orange peel but it was cheap and when I bought the paint was all cracked and peeling. Maaco did a little bit of body work but not much. The only bad thing they did was overspray into the engine compartment, I took it back and they cleaned it up though. Since I took the initial plunge, I have sent a lot of guys there who came away satisfied with money left over for cooler mods.

the factory ones have orange peel too, so im not sure that makes much difference unless it is really bad. I wonder what they would do for you if you did your own body work and sanded in between each layer.

As far as stripping and polishing rims, yes it is time consuming, but well worth it

Thanks for sharing your Maaco paint job. I had been considering doing the prep work on my car, buying the paint, and then taking it to a Maaco to paint the car. I'm not even sure if they would use my paint or not, but I don't have a paint booth, I've never painted before, and after all the money I've blown on other crap I've got to start saving money somewhere somehow.
Was black the original color? I wonder how they'd do with a color change... ? Do they even do that?

Maaco uses a lot of the same paint as other body shops and they are set up to do nice work. Their $299 paint special is whats junk. They use rayflex paint and do NO prep. Ive seen them paint cars without even washing them. They max out the "fish-eye eliminator", tape em and shoot em. They don't remove anything or sand.
Their higher up paint packages are much better, But the laziness from the $299 paint special sometimes rubs off on the higher end jobs. That is what gives them such a bad rep.
Car looks good. Looks like they did you good. Specially for $600

Looks good, I should show you some pics of my mustang. Looks okay, but up close you can see it really could use a nice buff or polish. I went to sprayglo. After the first paintjob which was **** I complained and they spraid it again. I will never go to them again, dont know why I did go there.

Looking good. Love black. Wow $600. I would not have known of you didn't state that. I paid $5k for mine. The Maaco guy here in NY (Queens) did not want to touch mine when I went there. The only difference in mine is no orange peel and no over spray from what you mentioned and see from the pic. But your right, more money for mods...whoooooooo hoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

Car looks good in your pix. Kind of hard to complain about that!
If it's a single stage paint and you aren't really experienced with detailing or polishes, then I'd probably leave it alone. It would be too easy to burn through the paint. The most I would do is a light hand polishing with a very fine cut polish like Menzerna 106ff.
