Sunburnt clusters
AND ORDERED 2 10x6 SHEETS OF LCD QUALITY POLARIZING FILM WITH ADHESIVE. I PULLED MY CLUSTER THIS MORNING AND TORE IT DOWN SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY. I REMOVED ALL THREE SCREENS. INITIALLY I LEFT THEM MOSTLY ASSEMBLED AND JUST SLID OUT WHAT I CALL THE COLOR SHEET (HAS ALL THE COLOR PATTERNS FOR THE SCREENS ON IT) AND CAREFULLY REMOVED THE OLD FILM FROM THE FRONT GLASSES. MINE HAD A LAYER OF CLEAR THEN A LAYER OF POLARIZER. USING ALCOHOL AND A RAZOR BLADE, I CAREFULLY CLEANED ALL THE RESIDUAL GLUE OFF OF THE GLASSES. LOOKED AT THE GLASS FROM A COUPLE DIFFERENT ANGLES TO MAKE SURE I GOT IT ALL. I CUT MY PIECES TO THE ROUGH SIZE OF THE GLASS MAKING SURE THAT THE 6 INCH SIDE OF THE SHEET WAS THE VERTICAL SIDE OF EACH DISPLAY. THIS STUFF IS POLARIZED SO IF YOU TURN IT WITH THE LONG SIDE AS THE VERTICAL SIDE YOU WILL HAVE BLACK DIGITS WITH A YELLOW BACKGROUND WHICH IS VERY HARD TO SEE. HOLD IT UP IN FRONT OF YOUR CLUSTER BEFORE YOU STARTPULLING IT AND YOU'LL SEE WHAT I MEAN! I DETERMINED WHICH SIDE OF THE FILM HAD THE ADHESIVE (OTHER SIDE HAS A PEEL OFF PROTECTIVE FILM) PEELED THE FILM ON THE ADHESIVE SIDE AND CAREFULLY "SQUEEGIED" IT ON THE GLASS. I DID A LITTLE AT A TIME AND MADE SURE NOT HAVE ANY BUBBLES. I USED THE RAZOR BLADE TO TRIM THE EDGES AND REASSEMBLED. MAKE SURE WHEN YOU ARE INSTALLING THE SCREENS THAT THEY ARE SITTING INSIDE THEIR ALIGNMENT TABS IN THE CASE AND THE LITTLE RUBBER BUMPERS (2 RED ON EACH BIG DISPLAY AND 2 BLUE ON THE CENTER ONE) ARE NOT BETWEEN THE CASE AND THE DISPLAY THESE THINGS WILL BREAK IF NOT ALIGNED WHEN YOU TIGHTEN THEM DOWN. ALL BACK TOGETHER, HOOKED IT BACK UP AND IT IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! BETTER THAN NEW WITH BETTER FILM! NO NEED TO SPEND $300 ON NEW DISPLAYS WHEN THE ONLY THING WRONG IS THE BLEACHED OUT FILM ON THE DISPLAY SCREENS. THE 2 SHEETS WILL RUN YOU $39 THAT INCLUDED SHIPPING AND ARE ENOUGH TO DO ALL 3 SCREENS PLUS ANOTHER SPEEDO OR TACH DISPLAY. WHEN I FIRST PUT MINE BACK IN I WAS MISSING ONE BAR ON THE SPEED (BOTTOM LEFT BAR IN THE ZERO) AND WHEN I DIASSEMBLED AGAIN I FOUND A SMALL CHIP OF BLACK PAINT OFF OF THE EDGE OF ONE OF THE GLASSES BETWEEN THE RUBBER CONDUCTOR BLOCK AND THE CONTACT ON THE GLASS. I just got my 84 dash working again this week, too.
I still have a missing segment in my MPH "0". So cleaning between the rubber pad and the glass is what fixed yours? (That's the one thing I didn't clean since they were stuck together.)
I tried to make this easier to read for everyone. (also eliminated the extra stuff in the links)
I BELIEVE I'VE SEEN THIS TOPIC ON THIS SITE BEFORE BUT I WANTED TO REVISIT IT BECAUSE THE RESULTS ARE SO DRAMATIC!
I HAVE AN 84 AND THE CLUTSTER (OF COURSE) WOULD'NT LIGHT UP.
FINALLY GOT THAT BEHIND ME AND AFTER A FEW WEEKS I COULD NO LONGER READ THE DISPLAY WITHOUT POLARIZED SUNGLASSES ON.
