Default Crossfire info:

Well I just wanted all you crossfire guys to know I learned a important lesson about my 84 today. I have had a slight miss when driving my 84 lately and could not figure it out. I did a tuneup, fuel filter and fuel pump etc over the past few months. Was still there when going about 25 to 30.
If you stepped on the gas harder it went away, but when you feathered the gas you could feel it. I tried the choke cleaner method and sprayed to check for vacuum leaks, checked all hoses etc. Nothing.

I looked on here and saw a guy said to check the throttle plate bolts.
So I checked and sure enough, 4 of them were barely finger tight. So I tightend them all up and now its gone. Car runs totally different. Like a new car. I could not believe it. It was sucking in air as I was driving and causing the miss. Now its fantastic. Car has not run this good since I bought it.

So next time your checking oil or tinkering around, just take the air cleaner off and double check the bolts. Easy 13mm socket. Tighten down any that are loose. You will feel the power difference and it will run better. I know I will keep a closer eye on it from now on.

And once again, it was this forum and another member who shared this info. This place is better than any mechanic around. You cant pay enough for this type of advise.
Thanks guys, I am glad to be part of this GREAT forum.

Kevin

The throttle plates have 13MM bolts? Its been years since I looked at a CF setup but I think the plates should be staked or locked down some way.If these happen to come loose and go through the motor, not good.

Also, here is a good guy to go to for crossfire rebuilds. The Corvette owners around Chicago speak great things about him:

I think you're referring to the throttle-body mounting bolts?

"throttle plate bolts" made me think of the butterfly plates in the throttle-body throat...like z51jeff sez, if those come loose, bad times are coming fast!

anyway, I found if you tighten the throttle-body bolts to the specified torque while the engine is hot, they stay tight. Loktite never hurts.

thanks for the reminder and am glad your baby recovered!

Yes I think your right Vermin. Those are the ones I am talking about. But what a difference in the way the car runs.

And thanks Ron, i have heard about Dan here in Chicago and I have also heard good things about him. I plan on contacting him in the future to clean my injectors actually.

i would like to do this but don't know how to get the bottom of the air breather off. I see there are nuts by the throttle bodies, is this all there is? Is it hard to get back on?

With the air cleaner box off and the air filter element removed, you will see 4 10mm bolt heads- 1 on each side of the tbi units. Remove those 4 bolts(they're captive in the airbox floor pan), and lift off airbox floor pan. There is a rubber vacuum hose at the rear to remove and that's it! To replace, reverse the procedure taking care you don't squash any vacuum lines or wiring bundles.
