Hey guys. Recently when i run my car (87 vette), it makes a strange noise. IT sounds kinda like a whining noise or air being sucked in somewhere. Idk hard to explain but the noise moves up and down in pitch in unison with the RPM's of the engine. So i go from Park to drive which will drop RPM's a bit... and the noise drops in a lower pitch.
Now just changed alternator so not that. I checked power steering fluid and its good.
I checked coolant recently cuz i had noticed some higher temps... Turns out no coolant in reservoir and couldnt see any in radiator cap. I Filled them, and 2 days later, none in reservoir and it dropped in the radiator a bit.
I dont see any leaks in the garage of coolant, so im lost to where it is going... but im wondering if these two things are connected.
Im thinking maybe water pump is goin out but i dont know the tell signs of this.
Any suggestions or thoughts?
water pumps dont usually just "go out". There is a packing,or wading, around the impeller that acts as a water seal. When it starts to go,water will seep out of the 'seep hole"..a small hole or pore, on the back, down side, of the pump housing. You REALLY need to find the cause of the coolant loss issue...make sure its not in the oil. White smoke out the exhaust is ALWAYS water or coolant..always.Blue is oil and black is fuel..no other colors exist. Go down to Auto Zone,or your favorite auto supply parts house and buy a cheap Machanics Stethoscope..it truely is a big help in finding the source of odd noises.

Another thing to check for with the coolant leak, is the radiator cap.
I ask this because I had a similar problem but was more like air being sucked in/out somewhere. I brought it to COW and they found out that the last guy who changed my spark plugs installed the wrong plugs and cross threaded the #2 spark plug hole.
