Where is the best place to get amps. I need all 4 for a 1990 corvette coupe, and dont want to pay $400 in the process. New or used, I will consider both.
If you have the bad ones they can be rebuilt for about $80.00 each.
There USED to be an archived thread that gave decent instructions on repairing them, but i don't know if it's still available. Might be worth a search. If you're handy with a soldering iron, all 4 could be rebuilt for under $20 with parts from Radio Shack. Otherwise i'd check your local electronics repair shop. They could do it a LOT cheaper than replacing them.
My rear amps were all burnt up, so I threw them out. I did ,however, try repairing the front amps by replacing the two capaciters on them. They started working a little bit, but did not put out much volume and eventually would quit completely.
Yeah, from what I hear, that RadioShack fix almost never works, or works for long anyway. I found a local shop that sells them for $90 each. That seems like about the going price for amps.
However, after I replaced 2 of my amps, I put the old broken ones on EBay, actually listed them as "non-functional" and sold them for $45 each to a person in FL, who obviously repairs, and resells them.
I repaired all 4 of my amps and all have been working for years and have repaired others from vettes and maximas. The capacitors that need to be replaced should be replaced with high temp caps because of the heat that the amps create. When I went to Radio Shack they didn't have the 105deg C caps, only 85deg C. Most electronics stores and distributers that have more specialized electronics parts(no tv's, vcr's or toys) will have these, or try digikey.com, allied.avnet.com, newark.com. just a reminder on the history of the amp problems, In the late 80's, a bad batch of capaitors were made by the company that sold them to bose. They had a tendancy to have a short life span. The caps went in vettes, caddy's, toyotas, nissan's, and whoever alse was using the bose system. replace the caps with quality high temp ones and you will save a bunch of money. If you can solder of course.
How can I find some instructions on this fix? My front speakers don't work at all. Also what are the diagnostic procedures on this system? I was about to buy a new system all the way around, but maybe if I can fix the amps......
Hey Bob,
This link has a really good procedure, except it is not only the two large caps that should be replaced but all of the black electrolytic (can) caps. You can take your amp out and read the different values or take it to a electronics store and they may help you find the parts you need. Just make sure they are high temp caps. I paid $15 for all caps to fix 4 amps. Hope this helps.
If you dont want to go that way, go to a web page called http://www.doctordons.homestead.com he rebuilds them completely from the ground up for $65 dollars each, he claims a very quick turn around too. He can repair the Bose systerm as well. I have not tried him yet, but may, as I don't have board soldering skills.
