On my 87 the big bolt holding the carrier up was frozen and it just spun in that elongated nut. Had to cut it off and reinstall a new one. Did this in the drive way. Would have been a lot of fun on a cold, dark, rainy night.
I took mine off for about a year.......you crawl under there and take bolts loose until the carrier falls on the floor.....it's that simple...
I started traveling to Las Vegas and Phoenix for work, so I felt it best to put it back in. So crawled under there and put bolts back until it worked again.....it was that simple.
However, all that is in there now is clean and the tire is holding air...
