The vendors you mention probably are using UPS ground.
UPS has a fuel and residential delivery surcharge.
A couple of years ago before all of their rate increases the difference between a commercial delivery and a residential delivery was a minimal amount.
Now just like the airlines they are in a position where they can name their price.
I recently shipped a 5 lb. box from MD to MI. the UPS shipping was
$12.00 which included. $2.00 fuel surcharge and around $2.00 for a residential delivery.
Large companies that use UPS get lower shipping rates but you also
are paying for new boxes and packing material.
Ebay sellers ship small items using the USPS first class mail in envelopes
or in flat rate Priority Mail boxes which are free.
If you do some searching, you will find members use items obtained at home depot to sub for these bushings. Pick up a gallon of paint for the house.......shipping on bushings $0.00

I think a lot of companies make most of their money on the shipping charges. I'm sure everyone has seen the infomercials where they'll send you a second item free "just pay shipping and handling".

Many eBay sellers are small operations that don't have to pay for a person to pack and ship. If you are a large operation with many employees then the shipping dept becomes a sizeable expense that has to pay for it's self just like the service dept, etc..

Not free. Flat rated based on what size box you choose no matter the weight.
The Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box has a retail shipping price of $4.95 — one price, regardless of weight, up to 70 lbs. for U.S. addresses. The international price, for up to 4 lbs., is just $11.45 to Canada or Mexico and $13.45 to all other countries, with savings of 5 percent for customers who ship online. Online prices also are lower for shipping to U.S. addresses. The online price is $4.85, and for large volume mailers who qualify for USPS Commercial Base pricing, the price is $4.85.

That would be nice, but I wouldn't know what to look for or where to find it.

The OP was asking why shipping costs were so high.
Packing material is expensive. A small cardboard box can easily
cost $2.00 in small quantities. Try purchasing a card board box at the UPS store and you'll be shocked at the prices.
USPS Priority Mail shipping boxes and envelopes are free.
Of course the shipping costs are not.

Haha, I was thinking of going to the local chevy dealer to test drive a new camaro for the hell of it, but I didn't figure they'd let someone like me just take one out. Then I thought to myself that the Ford dealership next door would probably let me drive one.
