Default Built your own Vette

This may have been covered on the C-6 forum but I didn't look. Have not seen it posted here unless I missed it.

Heard on the radio the other day GM has announced something new for 2011 Corvettes. For ZO-6 and ZR-1's, for an extra $5800 you can go to the factory and assemble your own motor under supervision of the GM crew.

For that amount you could buy a fairly decent C-4 already broken in!

Anybody else hear this? I was driving in rush hour so did not give it my 100% attention but think I have it right.

True, but that would be a really cool experience. If I was paying over $100k for a ZR-1, I would definitely spend the extra 6 g's and assemble the engine myself. How many people can say that?

Screw that. Maybe if they knocked the six grand off the price, I'd help them out. I view this as an expensive shop class.

That is true. I saw it in the Grand Rapids (MI) Press this week. For a raging lunatic, obsessed Corvette nut with unlimited funds this would be unresistable.

And that's before the union dues.

That is how GM is back in profit .You pay them to build your own car
Do you still get warranty if you build your own car?

Been reported throughout the media and I just got an email from the NCM about the program.

Sure $5800 is bunch, but when you consider that 6 large is just a drop in the bucket compared to a $100K ZR-1 or $75K Z06, there will be a few people who will want to do that.

The deal even includes one paid night at a hotel for the participant. I don't know how big of a town Wixom, MI is but there has to be something besides a Super 8....

Fully warranty still applies, and they give you personalized name plate to go along with the builders plate when it goes in the car. For another 4,500 you can go to a ZR1 racing school for 4 days!!!

Can you imagine some of the bragging you'll hear at car shows?

When I picked up my car at the National Corvette Museum, I was able to be the first person to start a Z06 just rolling off the production line.

Can you imagine what it would be like to be able to be the first person to start the car you helped build the motor in? Talk about provenance

Hey PLRX, I clearly stated I had not checked C-6 for a similar topic. I, like a lot of others here, have a lot of things going and don't have time to check every forum on here. Regardless of generation, I figured some C-4 folks might be interested so there it is. It's not truly a dupe unless it's already on this forum.

Meantime, of the 4 links you posted, one did indeed precede mine by quite a bit. The autocross forum post beat mine by a couple hours. The second link is some 136 pages long - - and the last one is a for sale listing which has nothing I can tell to do with this at all.

Have another beer and call us on Monday!

For that price I would rather buy a ride in a jet fighter.

So if you saw it 3 days before, why didn't you think of your C-4 brothers here, consider that we'd be interested in it, and bring it up here? Not only would have made you johnny-on-the-spot for passing it along so quick, but would have shown camaraderie and thoughtfulness!

There you have it, guys. Shows who's REALLY in your corner! If it was up to him you STILL wouldn't know!

(I'll step up for the abuse - I can take it!)

I think there are about 35,000 to 100,000 reasons why he thinks us C4 guys didn't need to know, and they all have little 1's in the corners and a dead president in the middle.

Blue, I've got a couple of those somewhere. I understand there are some rare ones with DIFFERENT president's pictures on them, but the one you show is the only one I can usually pull out of my pocket!
