Hi all, I am on vacation 4000km from home. My door key busted and my alarm is still on. I opened the hood and pulled the horn wire off to shut it up. But now have no way of shutting of the alarm to start the car. If I go to gm can they cut me a key without the old one? its an 84 and the key has the letter b on it. Will I have to have a locksmith drive out to the car? Is there a way to bypass the alarm if I cant get a door key(email this answer). Any help would be appriciated.
I'm a slow typist so check some of the other posts( if you havn't already), seems like a lot of people are locking themselves out one way or another this weekend. Lots of tips. good luck.
I have never tried it ...but you could unplug the starter interrupt relay. It's a white relay behind the multiuse information center. You have to remove the faceplate around the radio...take the three screws out of the multiuse center, pull it out and to the left. You will see the relay just right of center. has a green, green.white stripe and a red wire. You may have to jump the red and the green/white stripe. I think if you go to the dealer with your VIN, registration and ID they may be able to make a key for you.
Yep - a GM dealer only needs the VIN (and should ask for some sort ownership papers one would hope). I believe my spare key cost me $25.00 with the chip.
Its got to be harder than just giving the vin# to them:eek:. You could just about scope out any car you want and, with some fake ID, off you go. I think I'll get some black cardstock and make myself a little cover to block the # off just to be safe.
Just a thought that may keep you out of trouble. In the U.S., don't know about Canada, it is illegal on modern cars to in any way block part or all of the VIN number from view from the outside.
Last year I went to get a key made at a dealership and all they asked for was photo ID and registration. They made the key which worked in the ignition but the car would not start. I finally figured out that the chip was wrong for my car so I eventually had to take my original key in so they could retrieve the code off it. They told me that the VIN should have given them the correct code and that my ignition must have been changed at some point. This could've been possible since I purchased my car used with only one key coming with it.
