After months of intermittent glitches, seizures and weirdness, I finally got a code that confirms my suspicion. I've been having intermittent ignition drop outs where the car would just shut off for a second and then pop back to life. No codes were ever displayed but I've always suspected the MSD Opti for having weak un-reliable optical sensors. Finally yesterday I was stuck in some hot traffic idling. Never got over 220* though and the fans and electric pump seemed top keep it under control. When I started rolling again, it started to cool down and suddenly it just shut off between a slow 1st to 2nd shift. I let the clutch out and it re-fired, but the check engine light came on. It ran perfect all the way home but with the CES light glowing all the time. Put on a scanner this morning and pulled a code [ P-0372 Timing reference High resolution signal A. Too few pulses. ] Looks like I finally confirmed it. Another trip into "Opti Land".
I remember back when MSD products were the best that money could buy.
Last year I replaced my aged Delco Opti with an Accel unit. Now I'm hearing rumblings about those units not being up to par for the job.
So, Opti experts, which Opti is the best (by best, I mean reliable)?
(NOTE: I'm not hijacking the thread, I'm just getting info in case this happens to me (and other LT engine owners) and I have to spend $$$, time and skinned knuckles replacing my Opti.)
Yeah, I remember back in the day when Accel had a good product too. Everybody had one of their super coils or something with the big Yellow sticker on it. Now I wouldn't put their stuff on my lawn mower.
MSD is going there rapidly also. It seems that MSD now stands for Made Sometimes Defective!
It's a shame because it really is well built; it's just filled with cheap electronics. At the price they charge, you would think the electronics would be Military grade or NASA compatible! It's like putting a raw chicken in a vault and hoping it won't ever stink!

When DynaSpark company was sold a few years ago the best made replacement opti became a has been again. I've heard a few hard luck stories of folks using them and not getting a quality unit and poor customer service.
No one seems to make a decent replacement anymore.
