Hey everyone, I decided this weekend that I would replace my 89 corvette's A/B pillar wetherstrip. Last week was the doors, and that wasn't bad at all. Found this post in the DIY sticky and decided to give it a shot myself.
The previous owner had done some 'shabby/cheap' tricks to car and I've worked out most of them during my 1 year of ownership. If you look at the first picture, you can see one of the reasons I'm looking to replace the wetherstrip. It just looks BAD!
I started pulling the weatherstrip off and when I got to the top of the A pillar I noticed rust. This kind of freaked me out, so I went ahead and removed the A pillar's revile molding (Corvette Service Manual wording). The rust is just on that one corner, maybe the same on the other side. I've decided to stop where I'm at now because I was looking for a second opinion how I should continue.
Since I removed the side molding, rather than just painting it like in the DIY post, do I need to buy another seal that goes behind it? I gathered this from looking at how the top molding is done. It looks like it has a seal behind it, but in order to get it cleaned up, I'm afraid it needs to be removed as well because that black rubber glue is hard to remove.
Get everything off and strip it down to the bare metal. When I replaced a windshield years ago I found this in the top of the WS frame. Most likely you will find some there.I used Navel Jelly to dissolve the rust. Its been years so I cant remember what kind of seal this had.You have two metal pieces at the top.One is a retainer to hold the weather strip and the other is the reveal molding. You need to seal the first piece against the frame and seal between the two pieces.[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

I went ahead and pulled the weatherstip holder, and the reveal molding like you suggested and your correct about the rust behind it.
I noticed in your pic's, you pulled your windshield. In the end, how does this work out? What I mean by the question is, did you pull it yourself and then later have a windshield place install a new glass? From my knowedge, windshield places won't reuse a winshield. Correct?

I was in the process of replacing the windshield when I found the rust.I did everything myself but drop in the windshield.
