Not what you think. NO IBTL Please. I ran over a skunk this morning and I think he got tangled in the cross bracing for a few hundred feet. Do you know how much a skunk smells? A lot....more than you think....really. I had to bribe the guys at the carwash to run it through the undercariage was several times and the smell is still not completely gone. Hell, it's not hardly gone at all. Short of digging a hole and burying it, does anyone know of a way to save my Vette. Should I drive crazily in the rain whenever I find it or what. I can't spray it down with tomato juice or could I?

Any suggestions???

I can't put my finger on it but something in this story doesn't pass the smell test.

sorry, couldn't help it.

I ran over a skunk years ago, and all I can say is to just wait it out, and leave the windows open. It will go away. Don't bother with tomato juice...old wives tale. I'm thinking that perhaps a diluted vinegar spray on the undercarriage might neutralize it.

Yeah....somethin' about this story stinks to high heaven.

Put the car in an enclosed garage with an ozone generator.

It's not going away anytime soon either, but it will eventually. Being a professional driver, I hit them quite often. Ironically, water does intensify the odor. Give it a week or two, and it should be gone.

Spray the underside with a large quantity of (Doe In Heat Urine). It won't smell any better, but you won't smell the skunk....WW

Yup, it is just temporary and will go away so don't do anything rash...

I hear lemon juice will pretty effectively cover the smell. It's cheap enough, ...and it sure couldn't hurt.

Great link. I just got back from a friends garage and we put the Vette on a lift and mixed baking soda, vinegar and peroxide with some Dawn in a garden sprayer. I sprayed everything under the car, (Got a seal leaking...some oil) and the smell seems to be a little better. Of course some of the smell is in the drippings on the garage floor. We left the ventilator on and decided to clean the floor tomorrow.

I got some of the drippings on my shirt and it's now in the trash. Whew or should I say PHEW!! I know I'll be permenantly traumatized any time I see the colors black and white in the future. I do realize that this story seems to stink to high heavens but there's nothing I can do about that. This is eastern KY and every skunk in the world either lives here or has relatives that do.

Thanks for the link.......I didn't think to google skunk smell, I just wanted it gone. This is worse then the time I about slid off the road because I came around the corner at a cattle crossing and ran over enough cow poopy to fertilize Texas. That smell was gone after a couple undercarriage washes. BTW, that reminds me:

How do you find Texas???
Just drive west until you smell it and then south until you step in it.

Really, thanks Guys.

"White Vinegar or hydrogen peroxide counteracts the natural oil in skunk spray. You will probably need something stronger than soapy water to get rid of skunk oils -- a solution of vinegar or peroxide will dissolve and remove the odor-causing oils instead of just spreading them around. Try this mixture:

1 liter (or quart) white vinegar OR 3% hydrogen peroxide (peroxide may cause bleaching)
1/4 c. Baking soda.
1 tsp. dish detergent (also a de-greaser

Use commercial sprays designed to deodorize and neutralize smells to eliminate skunk odor. Household cleaning sprays and products such as Febreeze or Simple Green (a good organic alternative) can be effective against skunk smell on fabrics and furniture. "Skunk Off" is a highly effective spray designed specifically for treating skunk-sprayed pets.
Use bleach to clean skunk spray and odor from outdoor structures. Use a mixture of 10% bleach and 90% water (or detergent and water) to clean sprayed areas (such as a porch) that aren't in danger in staining from the bleach. Because chlorine bleach is highly toxic, don't use it to clean people, animals, furniture, or colored clothing.

To tomato juice or not to tomato juice? Everyone's heard of the old foolproof skunk standby: tomato juice. And of course, eveyone has a different opinion about how well it does, or doesn't, work to get rid of skunk odor. The basic premise, of course, is that the acids in the tomato juice will dissolve and counteract the oils in the skunk spray. We can't guarantee that it will work, but if you want to try it, add a can (or two or three) or tomato paste to the dog's bath, or your own. Using tomato juice on any fabrics is probably a bad idea, unless you don't mind the inevitable stains."

FYI, next time...

Hmmmm....what's the next place on the list for us to conquer and annex? Can't you just see the Lone Star proudly flying on every flagpole in Frankfort?

Better yet.....we screenprint a skunk nibbling amidst a sea of goldenrod.....and hoist it like the jolly roger.

My knucklehead rottweiler just had an encounter with a skunk last week. The peroxide, vinegar and dish soap method works; be thorough and generous with application. Tomato juice is an old wives tale. Doesn't work at all.

They tell me that tomato juice works wonders to kill the smell. My family washed the dog with it, after his encounter.
