I just recently pulled my old starter off and put a rebuilt one I purchased from O'Reilly Auto Parts on my 84, and now I can't get the thing to start. I have shimmed it like the picture I found on line told me to. In fact, I have shimmed it up and down and in and out and every way I can think of.
The one I took off did not have any shims on it, but the rebuilt one I bought needs them. I just don't know how many at this point!
I was thinking of taking it back, getting a refund and buying one from Auto Zone like I have so many other parts for my baby. I just replaced my Step Daughter's starter this past Sunday, which she bought from AZ and I didn't have to shim it at all!!!
I pulled the old one off, put the rebuilt one on, and BOOM! it started right up.
I take my old starter off, take it down to get a new one, get hoome, put it on, shim it, shim it again, shim it yet again and again and again...you get the idea.
Any thoughts on what I may be doing wrong? (Besides buying parts from O'Reilly's, that is.) This should teach me lesson...I like to buy all my parts from AZ, but they said they would have to order the starter whether I wanted new OR rebuilt, and I thought I was in a hurry, so...
What is starter doing? ( spinning / clunking / ?????)
Have you bench tested starter to confirm Bendix is throwing out to engage flywheel?
Might be faulty rebuild
Yes. the starter IS engaging and I had the guy at the store bench test it before I paid for it just to make sure it worked, because I didn't want to get home and find out that it didn't work.
My next door neighbor showed me how to hook everything up in order to bench test it myself, because I did that to my step daughter's starter and my own starter after I pulled it out just to see what it was doing before I took it to the store on Sunday.
It engages, clicks and then I hear a THUNK! sound when it stops.
Yes. The connections are good and tight and, in fact, I'm using a battery charger to start the car with.
I don't trust the battery, so I hooked it up to the battery charger.
Does that hurt or help?
The starter connections are all good and tight, though. I can clearing hear it engage and attempt to trun the motor over, but it's like the Plenum is just not engaging correctly, like it;s not lined up square with the flywheel.
My Father-In-Law thinks I should take it back and tell them I have the feeling it's just a bad rebuild and get another one.

I suspect your battery.
Have you got a known good battery to try?
Having a charger on it only makes 12V ; does not give the big Amps required to turn engine over
Take it back and get you a delco starter, maybe $10 to $20 more. Shouldnt need any shims or very few, I bet they gave you the 87+ starter which "fits" but really doesnt.

That's what I suspected too, so I looked it back up online and compared the part no. with the one on the receipt and it matches. Doesn't mean that the wrong starter could've been in the right box...
I'd have the battery fully charged then try with the battery at full charge.
I checked for a voltage drop in the line today...battery shows 13.4 and starter cable at the starter shows 13.3
Tried to start it again and the Plenum got caught in the flywheel again.
I'm gonna pull a shim out and see if it works any better. Looks like it's got too much of a gap...
My motor's not locked up (as far as I know).
My flywheel is rotating. When I removed one of the shims just now and tried to start it again, it gave me a click click click noise instead of the click thud sound it had been giving me before, so I checked the battery again and now it's reading 11.99 instead of the 13.4 it was reading when I got home and tried to start it so I put it on the charger for a couple of minutes and will take it's reading again.
Well, I took the reading with the charger going and it reads 14, but when I unplug the charger and check the battery's reading, it only says 12.96. Is there something wrong with my battery as to why it's not reading the same charge with the charger on it as without?

IT TURNED OVER!!!!!
YEAH, BABY, YEAH!
I measured the voltage at the battery and it was 12 something or other w/o the charger. I bumped the key once and it caught...I turned it off and waited a couple minutes to check underneath the car...Bumped it again and let it run for a minute or two. Hoorah!!!
Yeah for me!

Because you are reading the volts coming from the charger with it attached ;not battery voltage
