Default Gear Swap?

I saw that another forum member was asking about a ring and pinion gear swap in an 84. I am interested in doing this and putting in a 3.73 or around that....I have an 86 so its TPI instead of CFI..... will this be ok, will i run out of air like the other member was having as a possible out come, and what all has to be done to change it...like is it a b**** to change them???????? PLEASE HELP THANKS

Yeah, you'll run out of air too. The idea with gears is to get you into your power range faster. The L98 is a torquer motor that get it's power in the lower rpm ranges. 3:08 (3:07) gears work really well with the 700r4 auto trans, as opposed to the 2:5x's that are standard. The other problem is you'll be using a lot more fuel when you are cruising, with no appreciable power difference.

thank u thats great to know so a 3.07 wuld work great???? where would be a good site or place to find a reliable gear set?

First you need to check what gears you have, you might already have them, as about 20%+ of the cars came with them. They are fairly easy to find as more and more of those early cars are being parted out. Find the whole pumpkin (center section) and swap it out, should run about $300, maybe less exchange. I wouldn't recommend getting a gear set as that can get $$$$ real quick.
