I just recently picked up my 92 6-spd and everything is great. Just one stupid question.
My shift light has been disconnected by the previous owner (thank god), but just above that is a light that only comes on in first gear and And Reads "one to four" am I to assume that it's ok to shift from 1st to 4th. I did try it and the car didn't seem to mind, but it sounds kinda strange to me.
Is this right or does it have some other meaning. thanx for helping a new 6-spd owner.
What you are seeing is the CAGS (Computer Assisted Gear Shift). Chevy implemented this to save on fuel economy. When you do not go over a certain rpm in first, your are forced to shift from first to fourth gear.
If you can shift from 1st to 2nd with the 1-4 light on, then a previous owner disconnected the CAGS. If not...then you should probably disconnect it yourself. It's a pain in the ****! :yesnod:

Re: Stupid 6-spd Question? (MyC-4)
Seems to be that CAGS is an elegant solution to the problem. The General achieved good fuel ratings for the government tests, yet intelligent owners can eliminate the feature with a cheap jumper cable and 5 minutes effort.
After installing the CAGS eliminator on my 96, the occasional balky shift problem (outside of the CAGS range) went away as well.
I just disconnected my CAGS last weekend, and now I can't believe that I've driven my car for eight years with it connected. It feals so good cruising around without being forced from first to fourth gear at all the wrong times.
