Anyone have or know someone who has had their C4 painted at Maaco. The paint on my car is pretty good but it has some scratched here and there that have lately really been getting to me. It came to a head last night when i closed my headlights to find that the side screw had come loose and dug into my hood. I called Maaco today and they said i can get a decent job for 800 that would include prep and clearcoat. Any input here?? I know the my first inclination is don't do it but how hard can a same color paint job be. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Unless you have no other option i would not take a vette to maccos. They just aren't a high end painting facility. In the long run you'll only wish you would have gotten a better job.
Just to compare... my father owns a body shop, and MY cost for just paint & paint supplies (hardner, reducer, thinner, etc) was over $900 when I did my GTA. That doesn't include any body & prep materials costs. JUST for what flew out of the gun cost me $900.
What do you think you're getting for $800? Extremely cheap acrylic enamel paint with ZERO prep work.
I would not even take my old beater truck to Maaco.
I used to have a neighbor that did take it there once. His car was a real junker, and old Olds. He used to ask me for my used engine oil because when he went to the gas station he would check the gas and add oil  The think ran on 5 cylinders.
Anyway, he went one time and got their lifetime warranty paint job. He would never wash his car. Instead, once a year, he would take it back and get it repainted    since they would do it for free.
I suppose they did not wash the car before they painted it, so it would just peel. He loved it. Every year, he would get a new shade of green, his favorite color. One year he got this lime green that just made you :U He was quite the character.
i had my caprice done by them a couple years ago. a couple minor dings repaired & all over repaint (original color,w/ xtra metal flake) for about $500. OK for a driver, but NOT high quality. had to remove pieces of tape they missed & clean up some over-spray. also consistency varies from shop to shop, this was one of the better ones. wouldn't do take a vette there.
if you know how to prep a car yourself they will paint the car for about $200.00! i would only paint a car there if it was for sale .....definetly not a car you plan on keeping. :nono: i painted a 928 porshe there 1 time...it came out great for enamel...if you love your vette save your $ for a good paint job! :yesnod: if you lived in ct i know a few places that will paint your car for $500.00 (already prepped) base coat clear coat! i had my wifes 91 rs vert done with stripes for $600.00...it came out great but my vette is getting a better paint job for sure. :yesnod:
I WOULD take it to MAACO...if I couldn't find any kids I the neighborhood to finger-paint it for me... The adhesion would be about the same... They buy cheap paint in BULK (55 gallon drums) hire smucks just out of body shop schools to do the work.
We had our Bronco done at earl schieb. The paintjob looks good but I don't think it has any clearcoat  The prep was horrible, there was overspray everywhere and orange peel too. Either way it looks better than the original paint which was faded to orange, but no way would I pay them to do a vette.
BTW, most places will paint only part, I had my bumpers done for $600, EXCELLENT job.

Seriously...you get what you pay for in paint/body work...it is worth it to wait until you have the $$ and find the right shop to do the job right the first time. :)
Years ago I had a 350 Nova that was hit in a parking lot. Thought "take the money, get it painted at Macco, save a few bucks". Was a street racer at that time so picked out Compitition Orange with black racing stripes. Body work wasn't too bad but overall paint job......my handle on the CB from that time on was "Orange Peel". Get the picture?
maaco here in canada is really good with their paint work but they suck at their prep work.
if you prep your car real well and send it to maaco for paint trust me you will love the paint job but their crappy prep work has ruined their reputation.
