So how safe am I really? In sunny South Florida, it seems like everyone owns a SUV of some sort. As I check out the undersides of them, I can't help but wonder how safe am I? Are there any crash tests of the corvettes around? Either way I will still continue to drive mine.
Keep driving your vette and be happy!! Crash tests? If you are worried about that...maybe it's time for you to pick up consumer reports and switch cars. :)
Cheer up. You're a very safe ramp for a SUV in a head-on, you're a wedge under their rocker panel from a side angle, and you're toast if you're hit from the side at speed. Same as every other small to midsize car on the road.
One really good reason GM pulled out the C5 in 1997 was that the C4 would not meet the (then) new Federal Side Impact standards (from "All Corvettes are Red" by Jim Schefter) and it was going to be too expensive and heavy to re-engineer.
Drive like you're the only intelligent being on the road and make a lot of karma deposits.
I am by no means, new to watching whats going on around me and being ready to react, after all I ride a bike and have done so for 11 years. The car not being any safer isn't going to have an effect on when I drive the car. I drive the car every day and have put 25k on it since I bought it a year ago. I have actually seen some pics of corvettes that have been in accidents and they have faired alot better than what I have expected.
Since I've been hanging out around here I've seen some nasty looking Corvette accidents. The thing is that everybody has always walked away from them. Sure the car is toast, but you can always get another one. Like you asked, how safe "you" are, you're fine.
Think about these SUV's with extrememly soft suspensions and such that are taller than their wheelbase is wide. That's not a good situation, these things will roll if they have to do an emergency lane change at more than 20 MPH.
Sure, you might be involved in an accident with an SUV, your car will be trashed, etc. However your chances of being involved in a single car accident are greatly reduced while in the Vette.
10 times out of 10 the heavyest vehicle wins. you have a better chance of avoiding a crash in a vette than an suv but you cant win in a colision with one...unless it is one of those ricer models.
The performance envelope of the Vette makes
me believe that I can get out of trouble faster
than I got into it. "Drive Defensively!" is out...
"Drive Paranoid!" is better...
