Default Was the 1983 Corvette.......

The question came up the other day did the 1983 Corvette have the 1982 body design or the 1984 body design. Which was it?

I don't think GM had a 1983 Vette for sale to the public, I believe there were 44 made.

Mr. Bill is correct. There wasn't any 83 Vette's for sale to the public. It was a down year.

Problems that didn't allow it to be ready for the 83 year.

The 1983 Corvette faced quality issues as well as supplier problems from wheels to the instrument cluster. Just in case the hybrid electronic instrument cluster didn't work, they had an analog backup which is on display in the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. The bugs were worked out by March of 1983. 1984 production would have begun in June, so GM didn't want 1983 production to last just 4 months so they decided to skip 1983 and begin 84 production early. As a result all but one of the 1983 test cars were crushed. The remaining car is in the Museum. The 82 & 84 shared the same cross fire 350 V8. In 1985 a new Tuned Port 350 V8 arrived.

The 83 model year is probably the most discussed year on the forum. By now most people around here are experts. Unlike other rarely discussed items like "What kind of oil do you use?" "What is your favorite year Vette?" or "My hood won't open, Help". Which reminds me ......... Don't forget to wave ........

The production delays would have also required that GM re-submit the car for federal emissions compliance. That would have cost a bunch of money so that was part of the decision to not go through with a 1983 model and introduce the C4 as a 1984 car.

In 2006 I asked that questioned to a NCM employee and he didnt know. I asked because the tires had "road dirt" on them and obviously it has been driven on the street. The museum is extremely clean, no way tires could get nasty in there.

The same with the ZR1 Convertible but, The Falconer ( V-12 C4) was clean.

I have issues with the Magazine article.

Check out the type of wheels in the museum photos versus the magazine cover

You think they swapped the wheels??

The museum picture shows the 15 inch base wheels which never made production.
