I've misplaced my spare keys and want to get a replacement. I'm aware I can go to the dealer's for a replacement, but has anyone gotten the key (the one with the "chip") replaced at a reasonable cost somwhere else?
Dealerships will be able to make you a copy for sure. Last time I had a "Passkey" key copied was on my 98 Camaro (same key blanks I think). It cost me $25 or $30.
The key does not contain a chip! It contains a resistor with a specific value. Most better locksmiths can measure that value and give you a blank with that value and then cut it to match your other key. Or you can go to the GM dealer and do the same for more money. Or if, your locksmith does not have the blank with the resistor on it, you can get the blank key from the dealer and have the locksmith cut it and save money.

Or you can take your key to a dealer. They can measure the resistance. They will give you a code from 1 to 9, I think, that corresponds to the resistance. You can then order a blank using that code from Eckler's. :)
