Default Sound System Upgrades

I wanted to get some better sound out of my factory system, rather than tearing it out and starting over. I added a Sirius tuner (power from the console aux connector, and the FM interface tucked into the passenger-side storage bin).

Last night I installed an Infinity Basslink, which is a 200 watt powered 10" sub with a 10" passive radiator. I tapped the rear speakers to run the speaker-level inputs on the Basslink. It sounds good enough that I ordered a second one - they'll fit side-by-side in the hatch, won't interfere with stowing the targa top, and they weigh a lot less than a MDF/particle board box, sub, and amp would. I still need to button up the wiring, but you get the idea.

I ran a nice fat power cable from the battery down the driver-side sill, and I got a good ground from one of the mounting bolts for the ABS controller in the storage box behind the driver's seat.

2 of the basslink units will only add 30-35 pounds total. Since I got rid of the spare, jack, and resonator, I think I'm still at a net loss of a few pounds, and the sound system is awesome compared to how it was!

Update: 2 subs are better than one.

actually, i just installed one of these tonight.

I added an aftermarket radio (kenwood hd545), new speakers, and one of these basslinks.

what did you notice different when you added the 2nd?

Im still fiddling with mine and the radio to make it sound good.

The second one just contributed more bass.

I just installed an XM Tuner in my 96 and am relatively pleased with how the installation turned out, but if I can make it even better, that would be great. Where did you mount your antenna, and how did you mount the cradle to your dash?

I mounted the antenna on the black plastic surround near the hatch latch. I snaked the wire through the hole for the post for the hatch light switch (I enlarged it slightly so the wire doesn't interfere with the hatch operation) and snaked the antenna wire below the carpet to the passenger-side storage bin.

I mounted the cradle to the carpeted trim piece just below the driver-side dash. I didn't want to drill holes in the plastic dash, but holes in the carpeted knee panel I don't mind so much.

No visible wiring, and no significant damage to the Vette...
