Default Problem with Glass Top

Hey Everyone,

I just bought a smoked glass top off ebay, and I am having an issue getting it to fit on my 92.

I was under the impression that tops fit all models from 89 to 96 which is what this glass top came off of, but the front bolts do not match up to the fasteners on the top. I loosened the two bolt that hold the fasteners to the top and I see that they do slide from side to side, but I still can't get them to line up.

Has anyone else run across this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John

Smoked glass sounds like an Astro Top.

When you loosen the two bolts on the brackets on the top. Those pieces should move around.

You have to remove the header trim, then get the brackets lined up with the screws. Then you tighten those two bolts down on the top locking them in place.

I have a big long piece of plastic trim that they included, but I wasn't sure what that was for. The top fits on there without this piece of plastic. My fiberglass top doesn't have this plastic header, so I didn't think I needed it. Am I supposed to use this piece of plastic trim?

I did loosen those brackets, and they do slide from side to side, but I can't seem to get them to line up with my bolts on the car.

It's best to post a pic of that plastic trim as I don't know what it could be. Tops don't come with any extra trim.

The plastic header piece is on the windshield that your rear view mirror attaches to. Here is a tech article on how to adjust your top that Melrose put up before they got banned. Though I do recommend to avoid Melrose tops as they are junk as is their customer service.

This picture was very helpful. The brackets on my top are for 86L-88, and my car is a 92. So, am I screwed? Or can I change the brackets?

This top was used, but the seller did not own the car. It was a shop that replaced the top for a customer and he did not want to keep his old top.

Pretty much im not aware of a vendor that sells swap brackets. You would have to gut out another top frame and do it yourself.

If you cant ship it back for a refund I would sell it here in the WTB/WTS section and start the process over again. Consider it just a life lesson and dont beat yourself up too bad.

I gave someone here this number last week for the same brackets. Max @480-964-0779. Most vette salvage yards should have the brackets too.

What year did the seller say the top came off of? And how much was it?

If they listed an 89-96. Then I'd go through the complaint process via eBay since they listed it wrong and try to get all of your money back. I'd at least get the shipping cost back from the seller and resell the top if that doesn't work. But if the top is an Astro Top, you may not get much for it here since that top is the worst you can buy.

The distance between the two holes is wider on the 86-88 than the 89-96.

I don't think it's that simple.

Yes, I will sell it. I'd just like to get what I paid for it.

$281.64 + $90.00 shipping. Total was $371.64

Here is a link to the ebay auction I won.

Concur. Unless you replace the whole frame your going to have holes everywhere.Hence the just start over comment. Looks like a buyer above is already interested.

I just changed mine from 2nd gen top to a 3rd gen top. I had to change the brackets that attach to the windshield, plus the plastic trim under the brackets that goes across the length of the windshield. I believe there was about an inch difference in the width of the front bolts on the tops.

Well, I can't change mine from 3rd gen to 2nd gen. That makes no sense, plus my fiberglass top wouldn't fit then.

I will sell it and start over.

Since the seller listed it wrong. I'd file a complaint via ebay requesting a full refund including shipping. And then if the seller wants the top back, charge him shipping to fix his mistake. As he lists it for an 89-96. No point in loosing money on it. You can also file a complaint with Paypal if you paid that way.

The seller has a 100% feedback rating so I would definately contact him first. I'm sure he doesn't want negative feedback, it was his error after all.
