I've been having intermittent periods of total electrical "deadness" in my 94 coupe. I first thought the problem was a dead battery, but, long story short, the problem seems to be in the negative battery terminal/cable connection. As weird as this sounds, the bolt in the cable seems to be too small to fit tightly into the negative battery terminal hole. Is this possible? There is no way I can turn the connection tight. As long as the bolt is wedged in there just right, everything is fine, but I can pull the negative cable off the battery easily with my fingers. Do I need a different battery, a new cable, or both, or neither? Anybody ever heard of anything like this? I've only had this car about 2 months and I love it, except for the fact that it won't start consistently and reliably.
Could be the Neg connection threads are stripped in the battery, they are lead bushings and if the bolt is over tightened could strip the threads and not give good contact. Need to replace battery. Or the bolt threads could be stripped and replace the bolt.
Thanks! I knew I could find help here. Threads on bolt appear OK, & battery terminal threads do look like they're stripped, so the '94 will be getting a new battery for Christmas!
Got a new battery- everything works fine! Even found directions on here about removing and reinstalling the fender panel; worked pretty much as everyone said it would. Loosening the hold-down clamp required a new socket wrench extension, but besides that, the whole thing was not really difficult. Thanks again to everyone for offering their opinions and help.
