Whats the easest way to tell the diffrence between a dana 36 and a 44. Please don't say price. I noticed that first. LOL

The top of the D44 case is ribbed for pleasure
(the top of the D36 is flat across)

It's stamped or etched by hand on the bottom of the case....park on a curb and crawl under there. or count the bolts if get that low....

Not definitive
I have two D44's (early ) with smooth tops
D36 shown at front / D44 at rear
The D44 ribbed case you mention looks like this
