noise but then it will crank right up after several tries.
Measure the battery voltage at its terminals while someone attempts a crank. Battery voltage should not fall below 9.0 volts during cranking or you have a discharged battery, poor cable connections, or a battery at the end of its life. You can tell the state of charge by measuring the no load battery voltage at its terminals. 12.0 volts discharged, charge your battery up overnight with a battery charger, 12.9 volts or higher, fully charged and linear in between. Remove the battery cables (neg first) and clean the cable lugs, bolts and battery terminals and replace (neg cable last). Another possibility is the copper contacts in the starter motor. The starter solenoid at the end of its stroke forces some large copper contacts together that switch 12v to the starter motor and these contacts eventually get pitted and blackened and don't conduct well enough to provide the 100+ amps the starter motor requires. One way to see if this is the problem is to keep hitting crank over and over and eventually the contacts make a good connection and the starter cranks. The last time I had this problem, I hit crank 15 times before the starter cranked the engine. You can replace these contacts by yourself or have an auto electrical shop do it for you.
