If I am working on the car with the top off and just want to put the top on to keep it clean inside overnight I put a sheet of paper underneath it by the windshield.
Its my Vette, I also have my Toyota Solara, I think this girl is the "one" and I still have to convince her I am the "one" for her. So I don't want her to think I do foolish expense things like this often.
If she would not notice anyway, I don't see that you owe her any confession. On the other hand, if she's apt to figure out something is wrong, I'd suggest leveling with her. We all screw up, and it might get points with her that you are man enough to own up and admit when you are wrong - especially if it's not coming out of her pocket. Just my 2 cents worth which you are free to reject if you wish, no hard feelings.
(BTW, the photo of the top is useful in evaluating the extent of damage. Now as for your follow-up question about what to tell her, pics of GF would be helpful too! )
As a child I remember driving with my father. The car had a removable hard top. It flew right off the car and landed right in the middle of the road. He got out and had to set it down on someone's front lawn to come back for it later. Apperently it wasn't properly secured.
That's why mine got a brand new top the week I bought it. The previous owner did the same thing. He said it sucked to buy and install a brand new top..and then sell it a few days later..

Good One! Much like our Aerospace covers on all the open scoops, nozzles, etc on an air vehicle. "Remove Before Flight", but that's what the tag for the keys says... I'll remember that one.
PS, losing something like that has to totally suck! I can imagine that instant gut wrench of that thing flying in a nano-second and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Worse, you can accept it, but first you have to worry where the projectile is going to land.
My condolences and a thoughtful thanks for the pic.
I haven't lost 1, but i have found 2 c4 tops on the road.
The acrylic one was totally trash, it had been run over by
a truck. I sold the frame parts as aluminum scrap & gave
some bolts to a forum member. The opaque one is loose
from the frame, in my shop. This must happen a LOT.

Whoa, hold the phone......
This was an accident.
If she views it as anything other than just an accident.........you should consider yourself lucky if she walks out at this stage and not after 15 years and three kids later....with half your assets and a monthly spousal support check to boot
Do not hide this in any way.....you speak of it "matter of fact" and if she reacts in any other way other than fully supportive, then YOU should be the one walking out.

Thank you for the advice, she is 29, Italian and the most important person In my life, I was thinking about her when I decided to go to the beach with the top off, I'm not going to hide this from her, but she knows my vette is an important part of my life also, so the support from this group tonight will not be forgotton.
Thank You
Mental Note: Crank those bolts down...been going on a few years now in Florida the top is off during the summer (winter if its nice out) and when it goes back on I crank em' down good. I have a fear of explosive decompression during my "flights".
I have only had my top off a few times, and one of the reasons is it seems to take several sequences of tightening the front bolts before they stay tight. It seems after replacing the top and cranking them down, they seem to loosen up maybe three times before finally settling down for good.

Hmmm....sounds like the truth will serve you well in this situation. She knows your vette is important to you yet it was thinking about HER that made you forget to tighten the bolts. If she looks at this as anything short of a wonderful compliment to her RUN Forrest Run...then again she is italian so maybe just a slow stride so she can keep up
I agree with some of the other posts, you are starting off on the wrong foot with your lady. Take it from someone who has been there done that. I just bought a 2007 coupe and instead of hearing "you crazy nut we need a new so and so" (first wife) I now heard "oh honey what a beautiful car lets go for a ride" (second wife). You don’t know how good that felt.
If those scratches aren't too deep maybe they can be polished out.

One of the guys in our West Michigan Crew had that happen to his C5. He gets endless ribbing about being a member of the flying roof club from the rest of us. Maybe that is why he just bought a C6 Z06!
Glad that it did not blow off and cause someone to have an accident.

If she is the one for you, she will accept you for who you are, stupid mistakes and all!

Lie your a$$ off. A great way to make her think you're the one.
Then make her totally miserable after you're married when she finds out the truth. i.e. that you really weren't "the one". Of course you now have to ask yourself... Am I willing to let this woman ruin me financially? Cuz she will if you're not the one.
