Can only get cold ac airflow out of the defrost vents or the floor vents.
This is the only problem I have with the ac unit.
The ac unit is the electrically controlled model.
Any help would be great.
BTW, see if replacing the check valve (found underneath the passenger side fuel rail cover) solves the problem before digging into the programmer box. It only costs a few bucks at Autozone, NAPA, etc. and looks like this:

Note though, that if the cruise control still works, this probably isn't the problem. In that case, this should help.
There is a common problem with 1996 ac contollers (the box on the firewall). 1996 is one year only. Make sure you have vacuum to it and don't have a bad hose in the engine compartment. As twin540 said, check the tiny rubber hoses on the solinoids inside the controller.
thank you, i was going to pull that unit but it is just out of reach.
even pulled the dash to see if i could get to it that way.
have you got a suggestion to get to it? maybe pull the steering column?
Did you get it out OK? Like many things on the C4, it's a good job for a masochistic midget contortionist. The worst part is the hateful little push-nut that holds the vacuum manifold on the box. It would've been nice if they'd supplied a little more slack on the lines to allow the box to be pulled out from under the dash to disassemble.

I removed the "hush panel" on the driver's side (around/below the steering column) to get to it. You need to be looking straight up under the dash. You can remove the driver's seat to give you some more space to lie down.

2nd.
You can do it by lying down where the seat sits, looking up behind the dash. It isn't that bad, but there is a lock nut that can give you fits. I replaced this with a regular nut when I pulled mine. All you really need to do is trim the nipples back about 1/4 inch. The nipples collapse, which causes the air to not switch. Free, only takes some time.
