The base tires were a 255/45-17 in front so a 255/40 might be a bit shorter and narrower. Otherwise a 255/40 will fit on the front rims.
But why a 255/40 instead of the stock 255/45?

A 255/40-17 will be a full inch shorter in overall diameter than the factory 255/45-17
But it is within spec on the factory 8.5" rim.
