Default center console

I'm having trouble getting the center top piece off my center console. There's some kind of sorcery holding it on. I've got the dash piece off for the gauges, and all the other necessary screws. Also how do I get the shift **** off?

Pop the center piece off gently with a tiny screwdriver and remove the wedge you see underneath.

Console think there are some screws holding the console to the shifter piece in front of it near the top if I remember correctly. Think the lid has to be unscrewed also, been awhile memory is a bit fuzzy.

Don't know what year you have or if it's auto or manual?
My 90.. remove the screws at the rear of the shift/seat switch cover and lift it up at the rear then pull backwards. For the radio bezel, after removing this, remove the little vent above the radio (2 screws), then the 3 or 4 screws at the top and 2 at the bottom of the bezel. There are 2 spring loaded clips on each side about the middle that can be difficult but they are supposed to just pop out. I think a manual **** spins on, the auto **** is supposed to have some little clip on the bottom of it, but on mine, no such clip and it came off with a very firm pull up.

Thanks guys, I figured out you have to put it in neutral in order to move it back enough for the cigarette lighter to clear the dash. I didn't have the right tool to remove the shifter **** so I had to use two screwdrivers....That was a PITA!

Harbor Freight has some cheap snap ring pliers....will make it easier next time. The things have a tendency to fly into no man's land when using a screw driver.

Amen to that. We speak from experience. I'm still looking for pieces that shot past my head when I thought they were simply going to fall into my hand! Good luck

Or hit yourself in the face, I filed mine down a little before I put it back in now it is easy to get out & still works the same.

When I changed my 94 auto shift ****, the instructions in the replacement piece warned specifically about flying snap rings, so I was VERY careful and had no problems. It took me longer to run to NAPA for snap ring pliers (which were an absolute necessity for the job) than it did to change the **** itself. I'm thinking about a new shift boot also, so I'll do the whole thing over again and follow the above advice for console removal. These forums are great sources of help!

DonF, I managed to duck before it got me. I do wear safety glasses when working on the vette every time. Stay safe.

Very good safety tip....can never be too safe, especially when it comes to eyes.
