Default 1990 instrument cluster display

I recently purchaced a 1990 convertible and have a concern regarding the LCD display in the instrument panel. When I turn the key to "on" the LCD display is brightly lit then fades to grayish in a few seconds after the system check is complete. The display gets brighter when I turn on the parking lights but not as bright as when I first key up. It is difficult to see the speedometer etc. during the day without the parking lights on. Is this normal or is there a malfunction that i can correct?
Thanks
Jake

there is a light sensor above the instant average button. put finger over it and see what the lcd does. on the back of the cluster there is two backlighting bulbs for the lcd.

here is how mine looked before and after changing those bulbs

Thanks!
I shined a light into the sensor and my display got brighter. Is there any way to bypass it?

I did the Tach Repair on my 1990 Vert and had to remove the Instrument Panel, which entailed dropping the steering column and it was quite a chore to remove it. Is this the same procedure to change the Backlight Bulbs? Should the bulbs be changed with the original type or is there an upgrade?

I bought new sockets and bulbs from a parts store think they were 194 bulbs and replaced all the cluster bulbs

BTW .... Don't assume you can just buy bulbs and replace them. When I did mine I couldn't remove the bulbs from the sockets for some reason and when I tried it damaged the sockets. Kinda seemed like the bulbs are bonded in or something. I went to I think Napa and bought a bulk package of 30 "194" bulbs and sockets pre-assembled for I think 27.00 bucks and they fit my cluster perfectly but I changed all the bulbs in the cluster.
