My 96 CE needs new tires and after looking on Tire Rack the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus look pretty good. They're not just a summer performance tire, but seem to have good wet and cold weather performance in addition to handling well in warm dry weather. Before I take the leap, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these tires on their Vette.
Have them on mine, very satisfied so far. Quiet, seem to handle well on wet surfaces and aggressive cornering (I practiced in a school parking lot on the weekend ). Have driven in below freezing weather, no issues. About 2k miles on them can't see any wear, look new. Haven't tried them on ice or snow.
I put a set on my '95 last summer and have about 7000 miles on them. Wet and cold traction are excellent and they are very quiet. Drove into some ice back in December while on a trip which was no fun but I didn't loose it. Backend was squirrely at times but I was only doing 35MPH. Car had Goodyear Eagles on it when I bought it and they were terrible. I have Michelins on my truck as well as my wife's car and could not be happier.
Thanks for the fast feedback, I just ordered them and should have them installed in time for our Cape Fear Corvettes Club cruise to Fayetteville this Saturday.
Also, make sure you check Discount Tire Direct for price comparison. They are generally cheaper than Tirerack for the same tires. No shipping costs, and they currently have a $70 rebate on the Michelins.
That and if you have a local store, they will price match their online prices.
I just replace the tires on my 95. Many of the dealers tried to sell me the
Michelin Pilots, but $1200-$1300 installed was a bit pricey for me. I went with the Nitto Extreme 555's and after 1000 miles I am very happy with them. They are quiet, ride good and a lot cheaper, $700 installed.
I don't drive the car hard so I am not sure how they would perform under hard driving.
Tires arrived today and had them installed. The ride home was definitely better than the ride to the tire store. The Michelins are quiet and have a more comfortable ride than the Goodyears they replaced. Thanks for all the replies that helped me make my decision.
Tire rack price was $983 delivered and there is a $70 mail in rebate if you buy four tires, and Dukes Tire in Wilmington installed them for $100, which included a Hunter Road Force balance, and a nitrogen fill. Duke's was great by the way if you're looking for folks that really take care of Vetts. The owner drives a ZR1.
