Default Paypal question

Sorry this is under c4 section(relates to c4 parts though)
How exactly do you do private paypal sales? I really don't seem to understand the concept of how you'd sell it? And my mother thinks you would just get scammed out of money/bank account. Thanks!

You need to go to PayPal and setup an account for yourself. This account should have either a credit card or bank checking account of yours included in this information. Whenever you buy something, it will credit (take away) the amount of the purchase without the seller seeing any of your credit card or bank information by requiring you to log into its system. You will receive a confirmation email with all the details of any transaction.

I have used PayPal for years and it works well. The only drawback is that if something goes wrong, it does not back you up as well as a credit card company. No big deal in most cases. Just make sure the seller is reputable, as most are in today's virtual world. Especially here on this forum. Bad news hits hard and most reputable sellers will go to any length to avoid a bad review.

I understand how your mother feels, but it is very safe to use PayPal versus giving out your banking account or credit card information to an unknown party. I use it all the time and recommend it for its safe and anonymous financial tracking.

Best of luck,

John

Paypal is a very reputable and safe way to do online transactions. Paypal basically acts as a mediator between the buyer and seller. To receive money you can link your bank account to your paypal account. Im not sure but you may be able to get a check mailed to you. The other buying/selling party only knows your paypal account user name, they never see a CC number or any account information.

IMO, as far as online transactions go, its the safest way to go unless you wanted to pay for some type of escrow service.

Haha thanks for the responses but we already have a paypal account and use it online for purchases, I was just really wondering how like "private transactions" like over the forum happen, how do you do that if there's no website to go through haha

Simple your payment goes to the e-mail address registered to the paypal seller. If you receive a payment the seller sends it to your e-mail address and paypal credits the account you registered.

It's pretty simple. The seller would get the buyer's e-mail address. Then they would go to PayPal and click on "request money" button. It will ask for Recipient's email address, amount, and what the money is for. Then click "next". It will bring you to a screen that asks for a subject and description. When I sell something I try to get as descriptive as possible. Then you click the "request money" button. PayPal will send the buyer an invoice through email. All the buyer has to do is follow the instructions. I have bought and sold a few things on here and have not had a problem yet.

You can get scammed by using paypal for a private transaction. Some right here have been ripped off by members. Maybe intentionally or maybe innocently, but if you don't receive your merchandise, I guess it's a rip off no matter how you skin that cat.

I use paypal all the time for regular transactions though ebay and other businesses. I actually look for businesses that do use paypal because it's easier for me.

Just ordered some JBL speakers for my FRC as a matter of fact.

I have been scammed twice on ebay(once I got my money back the other time I did not) and never on forums including this one. You just have to be smart about buying. I never buy anything from brand new members. The chance of getting scammed from somebody who puts time and effort into this forum is lower. I realize that my definition of "great condition" and "like new" is different then someone else's I ask more detailed questions and ask for extra pictures about the item I am interested in. If they are helpful and answer the questions and take time to send pics I feel better about buying the item. If they don't have a camera available or are dodgy about the description then I move on. I will not buy anything expensive without seeing it in person. I have bought and sold a few things on this forum and I have had absolutely no problems. As a seller I try to make the buyer feel as safe as possible. I stay in contact with him, I will send any picture he wants to see, I always ship it when I say I am going to, I always send a tracking number to them the day I ship it, and I always buy insurance when I ship an item. I once sold a plenum and runners on thridgen.org, I didn't realize there were different ones for different applications. The buyer let me know it wasn't what I described. I instantly sent him a refund plus what it would cost to ship it back and he sent it back. I try to be as fair as possible and if I make a mistake i fix it. I am a trusting person. I will keep buying from members until I get screwed over, then I might change how I pay for things.

I've bought a lot of things off this from members without issue, and sold some items as well.

But every once in a wile you read where someone didn't receive their money or item they purchased.

I'm sure it happens, unfortunately there are bad apples in every bunch.

I have never had a problem with Paypal. I have used it several times to purchase from CF members.

an "ask me how I know" warning about paypal...

If you sell something and ship it to the customer and the customer used a CC to pay through paypal, they can dispute the CC charge and paypal will take it out of your account wheather or not you have funds. If you account goes negative they WILL send it to collections and affect your credit score.

If you sell something and ship it to your customer and the customer says they want to return it and you rec an empty box back. The customer provides a tracking number for the return box as proof of return and Paypal will accept that without ANY investigation and remove the funds from your account again even if you dont have them.

Yes law enforcement has to file a report but its been my experience that most agencies are too busy to follow up on such crimes.

Paypal sucks
but what viable alternative is there? I have tried several other virtual money handlers such as google check out bidpay and others. none are accepted as widely.

I am hoping the future of smartphones accepting CC charges will put paypal out of business. the CC companies (with the exception of maybe AMEX) work for the retailer as well as the customer.
