Default headlight help

My 85 Vette has bad headlight motors. I bought a set of headlights off an 86 and found out that mine had been upgraded to the newer headlights. So I bought a set off an 88. still didn't work right so I bought a new headlight control module. Now they open... kinda.

they will open if I turn them off and on 6 times. They totally close when I turn them off just once but to open them again I have to do it six times. Where do I start? the wiring to the right one has been replaced by the PO but the left one seems to be using the factory wiring they both work the same.

Thanks in advance...

Robert

Are you saying it opens a bit more each time or doesn nothing at all the first 4 or 5 times?

Yes, sorry should have said that... it opens a little more each time I go from lights to parking lights and back to lights.

Then something may be binding or stiff. The headlight modules sense load on the drive motor and cut the load when the load reaches a certain point representing a stalled motor.

Make sure the mechanics involved are all smooth and not binding including the motor gearing itself. Can't answer this one, but it's possible different drive motors draw different loads and a mismatch between the controler and motor might do that too..

will check those things but they close all in one smooth fast move. You'd think if there was binding or voltage problems it would happen in both directions?

I would expect it yes. Mine do open slower than they close but I don't know if this is normal. I'd put a meter on the in feed to the controler and make sure your head light switch is supplying power the entire time. Also I learned you can reverse the wiring to the motor. Use some short patch cords to wire each motor backwards. Lights should go down then for on and up for off. See if they still have troubles going up or if they now take several attempts to go down. If the up remains the issue, it has to be the headlight motor and linkages binding, if they have trouble going down (on in this case) then it has to be the controllers or the headlight switch dropping power.
