When I bought my car the wheels on it are aftermarket Chrome (see sig). I love the look of these rims and don't want to change. However all 4 wheels have significant chrome peeling and corrosion.
I have had two different people tell me I can have them rechromed and they might last 6 months and they might lasst 3 years. Once they have started corroding they can't get it all off. The quote to rechrome is $125 a wheel and it takes 2 to 3 weeks. I would have to rent a car, this is my daily driver.
I then got a quote on new 5 spokes. That is $1,400 including an upgrade to 11" in the back. As a result of this I still get the 2 current 9.5" rears to put drag radials on.
I really would like to go to the 11s in the back, but the cost is steep. I would still have to buy two new 315s for the rims.
I got a set of blems for under $800 installed from AFS on ebay. The "blems" were 1/8" scratches that looked like they were made by an exacto or a small sand grain size bump. Hell, they look better than the rest of the car with 75000 miles on it. You may want to get a set. Sometimes they also sell pairs of 17x11s. You could pick up these and rechrome and really be ahead of the deal.
I will keep an eye on Ebay. When I just checked the prices were not going to be too much different than the $1,400. This is the out the door price, includes CA tax, mount, balance, Chrome center cap, new chrome lug nugs, new chrome covers and chrome covered valve stems.
