I read that the reason for two marks on the '96 was to commemerate the two major victories of teh original Grand Sports.

I had heard that it was just to see the difference in the 3 they had at Le Mans in the 60's.

That's for the originals, for the '96 it's like I said, they didn't have 1,000 different marks in 1996.

Just to clarify the reason for the 1996 hash marks, they were explained in the 1996 brochure on page 10 as follows:
"Those dual red hash marks on the left front fender of every 1996 Grand Sport have significance. Of the 5 original Grand Sport racers, three coupes made their debut with the Mecom Racing Team at Nassau in 1963. Along with the distinctive Mecom Team paint scheme, color-coded hash marks were used on the bodywork to differentiate one car from another."
