I read that the reason for two marks on the '96 was to commemerate the two major victories of teh original Grand Sports.

I had heard that it was just to see the difference in the 3 they had at Le Mans in the 60's.

Right - they had red, white and black stripes (on the nose, though, not the fender).

....they had at Le Mans in the 60's.
Wrong - they were at Nassau, 1963. Poor old Zora did all he could to get the Grand Sports to Le Mans but the GM execs killed the program and they never ran there. They did get to Sebring and other US races in private hands.

That's for the originals, for the '96 it's like I said, they didn't have 1,000 different marks in 1996.

If you only wanted to know about the originals, I apologize for butting in.

Hey, Mr Mojo, the more the merrier! :D :D

Just to clarify the reason for the 1996 hash marks, they were explained in the 1996 brochure on page 10 as follows:
"Those dual red hash marks on the left front fender of every 1996 Grand Sport have significance. Of the 5 original Grand Sport racers, three coupes made their debut with the Mecom Racing Team at Nassau in 1963. Along with the distinctive Mecom Team paint scheme, color-coded hash marks were used on the bodywork to differentiate one car from another."
