IIRC the cam has enough overlap to make egr redundant so the bean counters removed it.

Correct. The overlap in the LT4 cam made EGR unnecessary, thus it was deleted (although I'm sure it was the engineers who made this call, and not the bean-counters, who probably can spell EGR, but not explain what it does or when it's needed).
