Default Tire Pressure

I went to refill my tires the other day and noticed the sticker on the inside of the door says "35psi" but the tires say "44psi." Which would you guys go with?

I would recommend what the tire say's. The sticker on the door was for the original tires and probably a different brand at that.

That's what I figured, but everyone I talk to seems to really raise their eyebrows at 44psi. Does that seem high?

go by what the DOOR STICKER says. Whats written on the tire is what the maximum psi that particular tire is capable of holding safely. You put 44 psi in a vette and your head will hit the top everytime you hit a bump

OMG...don't go by whats on the tire...you run the risk of the tire exploding from overheating. The door sticker isn't based on any specific tire, it's based on weight of the car among other things and is the safe PSI to use in the tire.

Also, if you do alot of city driving, potholes, bumps, etc., you might want to lower the pressure to about 30-32

Door sticker in all cases and for all cars is the safest rule of thumb. There might be exceptions but your car isn't one of them.

I run 35 psi. Remember a tire is a spring....increasing pressure increases the spring rate, and lowering pressure drops it. At 44 PSI, it's gonna ride like a dump truck and not handle any better. The tire says 44 as a max when you are at maximum weight....example a truck pulling a trailer would want max pressure in the rear tires.

Damn, I've been riding around at about 40-42. I hope I haven't done some damage. I'll be deflating tonight.

Only your fillings in your teeth

Higher pressures (beyond ideal for a given weight) increase wear in the middle of the tire. Too low and you increase wear on the edges.

You haven't damaged anything.

edit: As an example, I run 80 psi in the rears of my F250 when I'm pulling the fifth wheel, and 52 when not. Make sense?

my new Michelins say 51 psi max.....thought that was a little high, so I put them at 40-45......might even go to 35, but the way fuel prices are and running premium, I may like the psi at 45

I have run my 86 with 30 psi in the tires for the past 25 years. This is 5 lbs. lower that mfg specs and the tires still wear in the middle first.
