I want to first say that this is only about basic maintenance, and not about Corvettes specifically. It's about the brake job that I just did on my beater here in Italy. A 93 Ford Mondeo (yes, it is DEFINATELY a beater)

So, I'm pulling everything apart, and it feels like someone either tightened everything down with an impact wrench, or they put Randy Coutour on the job. Whatever, a cheater bar helped. I bought the pads and rotors because I don't know how bad this is going to be. I have shudder and squealing. Take the pads off and they are cracked to hell. All four of them! They almost fell apart in my hands! Then I look at the rotors. Someone has braked so hard and nothing has been done about the brakes in so long, that the reason it was so hard to get the calipers off was because it had dug a deep grove into both of the rotors! I almost Frisbee'd the discs.

So, here is my question. Why do you think it is that sooooo many people all around the world ignore their basic maintenance and let their cars basically break themselves? Also, how damn hard do you have to beat your brakes to cause this amount of damage to them? I've never had to replace brakes this bad...

Thats why my favorite soap box topic is brake fluid.
NONE of the vehicles I've ever owned has a maintenance interval for brake fluid.
Its probably why when I had an 88 it was the consistency of pudding.
I change the fluid in the regular cars every couple years, the 92 gets it changed once or twice a year - depends on how many times I go to CMP

I work on my cars all the time, do the periodic maintenance, change oil, brake fluid, belts etc. And I try to get my 23 and 21 year old daughters to help so they know their way around an engine in case something is leaking.

Yet they will call me and say that their engine light is on. I ask how long, and they say about 3 weeks now. So I ask when was the last time they checked the oil. Never. Guess what. 3 qts low. Why dont they do the basic periodic maintenance? I dont know. Its certainly not from lack of parental pressure.
