Just had my air conditioning checked on '85 and report was compressor seal is leaking, needs update/conversion to R134A, and recharge. Ecklers has a whole kit, "kit includes a new compressor which will operate with R134A refrigerant, a drier, an evaporator orifice plus the oil, seals, fittings and adapters" for around $290. I know repairs on the old one will be more than that, hoping they can even get a new seal. I'll keep the old compressor so when I sell car can still be number right - but has anyone gone this way with a new kit and would you advise doing it that way?
Since you were able to get yours fixed maybe you can help me. I checked the heater, AC, blower motor on my 1985 and the motor is still working. Does anyone have any ideas?
Found a A/C shop that did it for less than a new compressor. The changed the front seal, retro-fitted and added the new RA134A. Runs like new - but one thing I noticed is it doesn't get as cold as the old - but still is 100%. I found the A/C shop by talking to guys with older cars at a show & shine. They all seem to old guys like me but they know all the best places to get work done. That's my recommendation - go to a couple show & shines around where you live, talk to the owners and find out where they recommend. Also a great way just to admire old iron.
Glad you got it working. All you really need to do is change the accumulator, orifice tube, and O rings. Then pull a vacuum on the system, recharge to 80% of R12 rating with R134A and PAG oil. I never noticed a difference in my old 84 except at idle between the two refrigerants. I converted it in 2000, and it was still working great 10 years later when I sold the car.
