I have been getting a nasty vibration coming up through the steering column on my 95 around 60-70 mph anything above or below it smooths out. I had the tires balanced it seemed to make it worse. It has gotten so bad that it cracked my glass roof panel. I honestly don't feel safe driving the vehicle right now. I have no ideas what could be causing this and don't want to spend a ton on mechanic just trying to diagnose it. Any ideas? Thanks
Tony
Are your tires the same front to back? Try putting fronts on the back and vice versa and drive again. I can't think of anything in the steering itself that would be so strong in such a narrow range. I'm guessing some sort of tire/wheel issue. If it was me I'd take both fronts to a good tire shop and have them spun on the balancer. Let us know what you find.
Unfortunately the rears on the 95 are wider then the fronts. So I cant try what you have suggested. I have heard ball joints may cause this problem. any thoughts?
When I had a 4 wheel alignment and tire balancing done the car ran great on the way back to my house. The next day I went for a nice long drive and had a bad vibration problem like the one the OP experienced. When I got back home I saw some stick-on wheel weights laying on my garage floor. Evidently the guy that balanced my wheels didn't degrease the area where he attached the weights. Took it back to my mechanic and had the wheel rebalanced and all has been good for over a year now. Hope the OP's problem turns out to be just as simple as mine.
I have a very similar issue except maybe not as bad. I've swapped tires, swapped rims, road force balance a few times. None of it has worked. The wheel bearings dont seem to be bad. I am eventually going to change the ball joints, shocks, and wheels bearings and hopefully one of those fixes it. They probably need to be changed on mine anyway. Let us know if you get this resolved. For now I have learned to live with it. Something else I noticed that is strange is that the center of my rear tires wears much quicker. It's happened on two sets of tires and they have never been over inflated.
