Corvette -Definition
A corvette is a small, maneuverable, lightly armed warship, originally smaller than a frigate (2000+ tons) and larger than a coastal patrol craft or fast attack craft (500 or fewer tons),[1] although many recent designs resemble frigates in size and role. During the Age of Sail, corvettes were smaller than frigates and larger than sloops-of-war, usually with a single gun deck.
I always thought it was a type of plane...

The Name Corvette?
Where did the name "Corvette" come from? Originally it was code named "Opel." Corvette takes its name from a small, maneuverable fighting frigate or small ship. The credit for the naming goes to Myron Scott.

The Corvette class had pretty much disappeared from maritime history until recently. I think Sweden has resurrected the named vessel for some coastal patrolling.

Anticipating the NEXT question, "What's a frigate?"
It's a word you say as you throw your tools down, open another beer and decide to save the rest of that repair until tomorrow!
