Danger Will Robinson, Danger. There is a lot more to porting heads than simply trying to make them look like a picture. It is not at all difficult to seriously degrade flow without knowing it.There are several instructional pieces on the web as well as at least one book. I strongly suggest you do a lot of research and reading before you touch a grinder.
Back in the late 60's and early 70's, I use to port small block Chevy heads, for myself and friends. Back in those days the best heads were 1958 Chevy pass. heads. Loads of material in the ports and really small chambers.
I'm getting off the subject here.
Anyway, the point is, you can mess up a set of head in the blink-of-an-eye, if you're not careful and don't know what you're doing.
I also think it's great that you want to try. Just do a lot of homework first.
I have some I'll attach. There have been a few threads on porting in the tech section with pix. I remember Ron posted some up. Do a search there. Also there is a 113 section in Vizards's book "How to build and modify Chevrolet cylinder heads".
They did: 86.9 at .100, 144 at .200, 180 at .300, 218 at .400, 235 at .500 , and 239 at .550 lift.
i agree with you guys, i've been reading everything io can find about porting for the past couple of weeks. theres alot more to it then just taking material out. i saw david vizards book on amazon. he has a new book i think i saw on there coming out later this year,( how to port sbc heads).here is just some of the stuff i found and have been reading. http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te...ing/index.html http://www.popularhotrodding.com/eng...ads/index.html
plus i searched every porting topic on this forum i can find, but most of the pics are no longer in the post.
so i decided to just clean the ports up by removing the rough cast finish. port matching the intake ports to the intake. i'm not trying to open them up and try and make them flow like a afr 195 head. there was a big ridge right under the valve seat that i started smoothing.
i'm also smoothing the valve guides a little. and may unshroud the valves a little bit. thats all i'm going to do. from what i read that should help. here is what i did so far http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-g...-progress.html
i still have to finish this one. you can see the ridge is still there a little on the side i didn't do yet. my cam only has .500 lift
aardwolf, mine look nothing like yours. i see alot of work porting in those pics. i would not attempt to make mine look like that. thanks for the pics.
If I understand correctly what you are doing is called "pocket porting". Sometimes referred to as cleaning up the bowls. That is one of the biggest gains to be had for the least amount of work.
