I have stock 89 wheels ..... Does anyone know how I can get these polished up. These look ok from a distance but up close the surface is crazed and cracked.
remove tires and valve stems and run them on the car (on jackstands lol) at say 25mph. Sand them with 180/220/320/400wet/600wet then use mothers polish and they will have a real nice shine.
Truck stops generally have polishing services as well and charge about 40-50 a wheel for a chrome like shine
but doing it like I said will take you about a hour a wheel
Send them out to be refinished. When you get them back they will look like brand new. Shops around here charge $125.00 a wheel though. But if you like the 89 wheels like i do it might be worth it to you.
the alloy is real hard and sanding will almost do nothing, I stripped mine and it took 3 tries over the years and have spend 15 hours on them, and I still have some clear stuck in some places.
the corrosion runs deep and cannot be sanded off, or bleached out with any chemicals.
this being said, with the clear gone the circular lathe cut surface looks great, not too shiny not too dull. but the corrosion is there to stay.
Slick, you can get them right.
Did mine by hand in one real long day then went back the next for touch ups. Came out looking professionally done.
Much easier to take them in drop the dough and pay someone.
Wouldnt be in any big hurry to do more though.
I forgot you are the undisputed CF "King of Erosion" keep anything resembling aluminum away from you, please step away from the grinding wheel....
seriously, they cleared coated the front surface and painted the recessed areas grey then cleared, it's a mess, but looks good 5 feet away, what can I say I bought them like that...it was way worse.....
