I have a 1996 and the radio stays on all the time unless I shut it off. Even when the car is off, key is out and door is open, the radio stays on. Is this normal?

The radio should stay on until you open the door. If the door doesnt shut it off then check the switch on the door.

No, it's not normal.
It should stay on when you shut the car off, and even take the key out.
But, as soon as you open the door, it should turn off.
I used to run a direct wire to the battery so it would stay on with the key off because I listened to it while hangin out at the drive ins etc etc. Now I am old and forgetful and quite often just turn it down without turning it off so I need the key to turn off all accessories. You might check the wiring and see if the PO did yours that way especially if the radio has been replaced. Check in the fuse panel for any new connectors and the battery terminals for additional wiring.
I think it is the door switch. When I opened the other door, the radio shut off. If it is the door switch, how hard and how do you change one?
2 screws and one wire harness. Piece of cake....just use a pair of vice grips on the wire to hold it outside of the door while you're changing it, or it will sneak back inside and you'll have to pull the door panel to get to it. Yes, speaking from experience.

I'm sensing a few 4 letter words after that happened.
Sure wish the wires I worked on were about 6 inches longer. They are ALWAYS just a little too short to get to enough to use my awkward hands on them. Have never used the vise grip trick though so will have to remember that for future reference. Thanks for the suggestion, Frizlefrak!
Going back to the OP, if the radio has been replaced, that could also be the problem, not going through the original wiring with the timer. Also, don't the door lights work on the same timer? My radio has been replaced and is wired to work all the time instead of going through the switch and timer.
