I have been reading and checking out the throttle body coolant bypass to keep throttle body cooler. Seems like a good idea but instead of connecting the two smaller hoses with the 3/8 to 5/8 barb fitting ( which you can't buy at most hardware stores but can pay a corvette parts dealer $20 for along with the hoses are to short and need to be replaced anyway) why not remove the two smaller hoses and use barb fittings to repair the larger hoses after you remove the plastic T fitting the smaller hose was connected to. This way you don't have the 5/8 hose running across the engine compartment and really serving no porpose. Am I nuts or is this another way to equal the same result?
A new set of hoses made without the throttle body splice would be better. If you remove the throttle body hoses does the hole through the body need to be covered?
Honesty, I think those bypass things are a joke. You do NOT get any power increase from it and it wastes your time. Unless, you just like the idea of having one less thing to potentially leak coolant onto your Opti. My 2 cents.
Anytime you can cool the incoming air you can expect power gains. The Corvette engineers put that on there to heat the incoming air charge in order to pass emission requirements. By all means, remove it! I simply bought some hose caps from Autozone, I got an assorted set for like 10 bucks, and simply removed those lines all together and capped the metal tees as well as the throttle body, just to keep out critters and avoid an open hole. Or you can do what you said and eliminate the tees all together. Your choice, but do it.
The link posted by 93 Rubie was very interesting, I did the hypertech program and air filter modification a while back, on the fence on coolant bypass, I was told this was for warming the throttle body in cold weather.
id like to remove those coolant lines (not that i expect power) because its less clutter in the bay and you dont have to drain the coolant to take the tb off. i dont want a line running across the engine for no reason so im interesed in this thread. if you could get the 2 radiator hoses without the T's that would be awesome
Gregg's TB coolant passage elimination helps get rid of the extra bungs sticking out after you have removed the hoses. Later years are slightly different in the hose routing but why not get rid of the extra crap. I just used one new longer 5/8 hose instead of trying to adapt one hose to another. Heres a pic of the TB remounted, its kinda hard to tell how much better it looks without a side by side before/after pic.
Although I did it I'm sure there were no noticeable gains. The only carb icing I ever saw was on a Cessna 152. Wasn't fun. I've never understood how a warm area around the TB could heat up 400-700 CFM of air. That would be a 10' x 10' x 7' room full of air in one minute. That little bit of metal to air heat exchanger ain't gonna make no difference.
I didnt do it for any gains thats for sure. I am on a quest to clean all the extra crap outa the engine bay. AIR pump and all piping are gone. Removing the pipes from the exhaust really helped. Getting ris of the little elbow hose from the TB eliminated the chance to have another leak. EGR stuff all gone except the manifold solenoid and I jut got my block off plate today. I guess its goes on this weekend.
Some lawyer in a meeting suggested throttle plates could freeze up in -50 degrees while joy riding in Siberia. You can't really believe that would ever happen under a C4 vette hood. You could cook a nice meat loaf under there on the coldest winter day anywhere.
It won't produce hp but will keep the heat down around the injector wiring and vacuum hoses that cook anyway. Warning against doing it for safety reasons is a bit far-fetched. If it's that cold you should be home in front of a fire with a good dog and a bottle of Maker's Mark anyway.
It took me about an hour to cut the IAC section out and smooth the rough edges. $50 is kinda pricey for something that simple. Course $150 for their AIR delete bracket and pulley is kinda pricey as well and I did buy one of those. I didnt have access to most of the materials or tools to make one of those or I woulda done the Agent 86 bracket.
