Default 93 6 speed

Some times, the shifter will not go into 2nd gear from 1st. I am forced to go to 3rd and can then shift it back into 2nd.

Not sure if there was some sort of "lock out" on the 93 6 speed trannys. Happens under normal acceleration.

Car has 108K, is well maintained and not hot rodded.

Can't totally speak for the '93, but my '90 has the "One to Four" lock out when the right circumstances occur.

You are probably experiencing what the factory called Skip Shift.
This was for fuel economy, and is still in use on the C6 today.
Under certain conditions, a solenoid will prevent the shifter from going into 2nd.

Next time this happens, look and see if you have a light on the dash "One-To-Four".
If so, you won't be able to shift into 2nd.

Several ways around this. Just stay in 1st until the rpm's are raised a little. The light will go out and you will be allowed to shift into 2nd.

You can also disable the "Skip Shift" feature by unplugging it.
Also, several companies market a skip shift eliminator.

I haven't noticed a "one to four" light. Yes, am aware that "Skip Shift" exists and have driven other Corvettes w/this feature, but normally, it engages on pretty hard acceleration. In my particular case, I will ease off from the traffic light, and there I am, trying to find 3rd gear. Occurences are inconsistent, as well. I'll just chalk it up to another one of the idiosyncracies of this GREAT machine.

Actually, that is when you would least expect it.

That is exactly when to expect it the most.

But since you are aware of the feature and know what to expect, the next thing I would check would be your clutch fluid.
Erratic shifting can be caused by hydraulic issues in the clutch system.

I have a 93 and had some shifting problems and it was low on fluid and I hope that's your fix.
