Instead of searching the "TIRE RACK" on-line, I decided to call them directly to see if they had a substitute for my old spare tire. It turns out they are able to look at tire sizes that are out of the range presented on their web site. It also turns out they do stock Temporary Spares close to the original spare tire size that came with my '86.
The size we settled on was T135/90-16 to replace the original T155/80-16. After mounting it is about a half inch narrower in the tread and is about a half inch higher than the original and fits in the spare tray holder perfectly. And best of all the date code is 1009 (10th week of 2009) not something out of 1986. By reusing the original wheel, the problem of bolt patterns and caliper clearences is avoided and the new mounted tire is about a half inch lower that the full size tires on the car so it should fit in the wheel wells with no problems.

Why don't you just use your old steering wheel as a spare.
