I am FINALLY ready to put the carpet down in my car! However... the jute padding from the stock carpet was bad, so I tossed it out. I looked around for replacement jute paddings and it looks like I'd have to give an arm and leg to get one from the local upholstery shops. I know there are some available online, but I'm on a time constraint right now and I'd like to get the padding A.S.A.P.
Soo... will household carpet padding work fine in the car? I can get the 1/2 inch thick (or thinner, if they have any) and cut it to size. Any concerns with heat, longevity, moisture, etc? Fire away.
I added foil backed insulation throughout the entire car, would that help? I researched that the heat rating for household carpet padding is up to 200 degrees.
I don't know why that wouldn't work. You might consider getting some contact cement made for foam (It's different than the normal contact cement) and gluing the padding to your insulation or carpet to make it lie down better. I've used it on black door panels (not a vette) and had no problems. I got the higher density stuff because heavier will probabl kill more sound and block more heat. Something about thermal mass and such. Go for it and post pics so we can all learn something.
Lots of ways to skin this kitty. Do a search in the C3 forums and there are numerous ideas and pics to help out. I redid my 78 with foil backed insulation from Lowes and some Dynomat and it has worked out great for the last 4 years, and that car had a very hot cabin and floorboards. Get some 3M spray on glue and cut and glue it down and slap the carpet in and go for a ride!

I'll garuntee you that the temps over the cats is much higher than that.
Reminds me I need to get rid of my carpet and other crap this winter.

Having the foil backed stuff right at Lowes makes it a great alternative. Another advantage is I dont think it will soak up any water. I am planning to get a roll and replace the thick fiberglass pad on my targa to gain a little headroom back.
Why not do it the hard way, buy a kit designed to do the entire job? Precut ready to install. I like to be innovative and work on the cheap but there are times when a buck spent is well worth it.

There are no pre-cut jute padding on the market today.
I think some people are getting the wrong idea... I ALREADY bought and installed a foil backed insulation throughout the whole car, I just need some padding to put under the carpet since, without the padding, the carpet will lie lower than the rear cargo storage doors. If I put padding that area to bring the carpet up to be even with the cargo storage doors, then there wont be any bumps or raises in the carpet. That is what I am looking for.
