I'm about to add 1 full 20oz can (but I bought 2 bottles) to a 1/4 tank at the gas station, and then add another 1/4 of 93octane to mix it up, resulting in 1/2 tank (approx 10 gallons total) + 20oz of Techron. The bottle says that 20oz treats up to 20 gallons. I was considering using this concentrated method to ensure a more thorough cleaning. Should I do this? Will it hurt anything? Bottom line: I want to make the mixture as concentrated as possible WITHOUT doing any harm. I have two 20oz bottles of Techron to play with.
Also, I will be replacing my fuel filter soon too, should I do replace that 1st?
Note:All of this is in response to OBD2 codes that indicate my engine is running on an air/fuel mixture that is too lean.
I don't think it will hurt anything. I throw in a bottle every now & then on less than a full tank. I use Chevron & Texico gas that already has Techron in it, and the car runs clean & mileage is good for a 96 LT4 with 70K on it. BUT
I just got back from a Colorado vacation where I took my V6 Saturn (needed room for 3 when I got there). I had been getting 17mpg city and about 24 hwy. Before I left I put in 8oz. of a 16oz. bottle of Lucas fuel system cleaner and tossed the other half in the trunk for the next tank full.[15gal. tank] I don't know what the difference is between that and the Techron I'd been using, but I got an incredible 28mpg for the whole vacation and one tank I got a hair over 30mpg with a V6 going mostly 80 for that highway tank! I'm going to try some of that in the Vette for the next fill and see if I get similar results.
Techron works wonders on cars that have carbon deposits and ping. Never found the need to do such a concentrated amount, but I do not think it will harm anything. On cars I used Techron on I would do the treatment just before an oil change. The only thing I would recommend is changing the oil afterwards. I think it used to say that on the directions, at least long ago when I used to use it.
