Default 95 not engine braking

just got the car a couple of weeks ago and getting used to it i started to notice that the car didnt feel like it was engine braking. i mean like it dropped a mph in 2-300 yards. i was wondering if this is normal? if not what is causing this?

I'm guessing it's an automatic.

If so, then that's the way my 87 works.

If you want it to 'brake' more, down shift it.

Ok. That does seem odd then..

Any manual I've ever owned would brake when you down shifted.

Someone should be a long to let you know if it's 'normal' or not.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

You either have a hanging throttle or one really screwed up clutch.

It should slow down pretty quick if you downshift a manual 6spd. Does it idle OK and come back to idle when you blip the throttle? I'd think the Idle air controll is gunked up and sticking open. May need a throttle body cleaning along with that idle air valve. It makes it act like the throttle is not closing all the way or closing very slowly.

throttle works flawlessly. idles great and and clutch may be kinda old but it doesnt slip or chatter at all.

those were my thoughts. ill have to check the throttle plate and intake tract for build up. it is slow returning to idle when you blip it and when the A/C is on it wants to idle at 1500 while moving but when you stop it goes to 1000. ill also check the idle air control. thanks!

I think you've answered your own question.
Like I said, your throttle is hanging. Also 1,000 rpm is still a bit high for an idle.

idle is 1000 with A/C running. without it running it idles at 700. doesnt engine brake while A/C off. when ON it brakes better but still very slow. like i said ill check the throttle plate and intake. thanks for the help!

IAC may be hanging open a bit. RPM shouldn't be any different with A/C running....the ECM should merely open the IAC a bit to compensate for the additional load on the engine and keep the idle speed constant. Might not hurt to remove the IAC and clean it....they can get carboned up.

i didnt think about that. thanks! cleaned intake out with intake cleaner (seafoam) runs so amazing now. still idles up when moving or when A/C is on. gonna try IAC tomorrow. thanks Frizlefrak!

Compression test. Low compression will result in inefficient engine braking, among other things.
